Purity of Mind Part 2
Like most of you, I love music. You can catch me singing all throughout the day (even if it doesn’t sound good hehe). But, I am very careful with what I listen to. I make sure the music I listen to doesn’t lead me away from God. I’ve heard it jokingly said that there are albums you can listen to that can get you pregnant by the third song. While that’s a funny way to put it, it is true that much of our modern music is full of sexual content.
One song in particular is, The Motto by Drake and Lil Wayne, it was topping the charts a couple months ago. This song degrades women, and is beyond any lyrics I have ever heard. I don’t understand how girls can like these artists when they sing about women meaning only as much as a piece of meat to them. It is amazing to me that feminist groups haven’t risen up and fought against these artists, because their philosophies sure don’t match up.
If you are constantly listening to these songs the world is offering you, then your thoughts will think about what they are singing about. The lyrics are so catchy, like for example Rihanna’s ‘Birthday Cake’ song. But the meaning and sexual perversion that song stirs up, we as Christians should have no part in.
Listening to degrading sexual lyrics has been shown to speed sexual activity (Pediatrics, 2006).
Lady Gaga, Trey Songz, Drake, Lil Wayne, Miley Cyrus, Katie Perry, Rihanna, Jay-Z and etc. The lyrics in these songs are vulgar and explicit about sex. If you fill yourself with that, you will have bad thoughts and want to do those things.
It comes down to this ladies, what are you filling your mind with? If you are constantly filling your mind with things that don’t honor God you will not have purity in your mind.
Colossians 2:8 says “Be careful not to let anyone rob you [of this faith] through a shallow and misleading philosophy. Such a person follows human traditions and the world’s way of doing things rather than following Christ.” GWT
The world’s way of doing things… what they put out there for us to buy, listen to and watch can literally steal our minds away.
And then one chapter down it says this, “Keep your mind on things above, not on worldly things.” Colossians 3:2 GWT
Wow ladies! This is such a challenge with everything being thrown our way through movies, TV, friends and music. I believe if we keep our minds on godly things then we can have purity of mind.
I am a living example of this, when I first gave my heart to Jesus I came across this scripture. Philippians 4:8 it says “And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise.”
Another translation puts it this way, “Finally, brothers and sisters, keep your thoughts on whatever is right or deserves praise: things that are true, honorable, fair, pure, acceptable, or commendable.”
So according to the word of God, we are believers should only be thinking on things that are pure, lovely, right, honorably.
You may say, I can’t do that! But, you can do it, because if I did it, I believe anyone can!! When I was 13 I would come home from school and watch Total Request Live (TRL) and keep up to date on the latest in the world. If someone was to tell me to throw away my Usher, N’sync, Brittney, and Christina CD’s, and stop watching MTV, I would have said NO WAY!! But when I got Jesus in my heart and got born again, He began to work on me. One day when I came home from church I got rid of all my secular music and I have never gone back. As I began purifying my mind as a teenager, my life was full of so much more joy and energy. The world was no longer weighing me down. Anything is possible with God!
I challenge you to truly take inventory in your life, on what you are letting influence you. Do you find yourself humming the latest Rihanna song? Do you want to go see the movie in the theater that is filled with sexual images? Do you read novels that have sexual content that stirs sexual thoughts in your mind?
Ladies a pure mind is so freeing. It also is the first step to purity. If you are pure in your mind it will be harder to slip up in the physical. I have heard many stories of girls who had purity of body but not of mind, and then when the chance to get physical came up, it was easier for them to get physical because of the state of their mind. So purity of mind is very important.
It doesn’t matter the current state of your mind, I believe it can become pure as snow. It says in Isaiah 1:18: “Though your sins are bright red, they will become as white as snow. Though they are dark red, they will become as white as wool.”
With God’s help you can purify your mind. If you need specific help, I want you to know that I am here for you; you can email me at firstname.lastname@example.org.
