Purity of Mind Part 1

A lot of people think that purity is only abstaining from sex. But purity is much more than that. I like to break purity into three parts, purity of mind, purity of heart & purity of body. This blog is all about purity of mind and how to keep your mind pure.

Before we sin in the physical, we sin first in our mind. So to start off let me ask you: What are you watching?

“Girls with a heavy sexual media diet engage in sexual activity younger than their peers” (Harris Interactive, 2007).

A new study shows that 12 to 14 year-olds exposed to the most sexual content in movies, music, magazines, and on television were 2.2 times more likely to have had sexual intercourse when re-interviewed two years later than their peers who had a lighter sexual media diet. (2006, CBS News)

Of the top 20 shows watched by teens, 83% were found to have featured sexual content, with 20% depicting or strongly implying intercourse. (Kaiser Family Foundation)

Are you watching movies and shows that fill your mind with sexual images and thoughts?  ‘Chick flicks’ or romance movies have numerous sexual scenes in them. It is rare to find a romance movie that doesn’t. We see these scenes and it sticks those images in our mind. The movie The Lucky One based off a Nicolas Sparks book starring Zac Efron just released on DVD this week. I actually had to turn the trailer off because of the heated romance scene.

The problem we are all trying to avoid is sexual sin.  Images can quickly turn into fantasies.  If we stop the image, we will stop it before it ever becomes a fantasy or something we want to act out.  If you find yourself having lots of sexual thoughts, be honest with yourself and check how much sexual media you are digesting. There is a direct link between sexual media intake and your thought life.

Another way we can dirty our minds is by what we are looking at on the internet. Do you have a problem with looking at porn or even soft porn? Many of today’s top charting artists have music videos that I would label as soft porn. So it could even be sneaking in by the music videos you are watching. This might surprise you but one out of every six women, including Christians, struggles with an addiction to pornography. (Today’s Christian Woman)

Jesus was very clear on what He thinks about our thought life: “But don’t think you’ve preserved your virtue simply by staying out of the bed. Your heart (mind) can be corrupted by lust even quicker than your body. Those leering looks you think nobody notices- they are also corrupt.”  -Matthew 5:28 MSG

The NIV says it this way: “But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman (man) lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.”

Ladies, it is a sin to look at porn and soft porn. Jesus tells us here that even if we look at a man with lust we have already done it. We have to be so careful with what we let our eyes see, because images have power and they come with thoughts that we do not want to have.

I believe that if we watch what we let our eyes see we can have purity of mind. Next week I will post Purity of Mind Part 2 about what we are listening to.

Love,

~Alyssa
